Blog:1 Game Concept

Game Concepts

All of the groups of the game education had previously been working on making a game concept with the aesthetics they been given by the institute. The reason why we been creating  game concepts was as an an exercise to prepare us for the next project. Now that all the groups had made a concept it was time for every group to choose another groups concept to make a complete game of it.

So it was time for my group, Kraken to choose one of the concepts we wanted to work with. Sadly, because of the lack of communication my group only had seconds to choose which game we wanted to work. Since group Kraken had not really come to an agreement on a concept the project manager just quickly picked one of the concepts we had been discussing, Atherial. What was even worse was that Atherial was one of the most popular pick, alongside with the concept Umibozu.

We now had a new concept to work with and were all excited to make a real game, but we wanted to make our game to stand out from all of the rest of the Atherial games. In order to do so, without straying too far away from the original concept we had to firstly define the most important aspects of the concept.

So what is Atherial?

Atherial was the shoot em up concept made by group Vampire. The game is about a ship flying across the sky, encountering different sea creatures like slugs and rays.

The Ship.

The default weapon is a laser and the ships most powerful weapon is the harpoon.

The Small Enemies.

The Sky Slug, Tangler and the Aether Ray are the small enemies the player encounters in the first levels.

The Boss.

The whale is the most powerful enemy. They player will face the whale in the last level.

These were entities we had to keep in the game, but we wanted to redefine them a bit after our own design.

I was assigned the role of lead artist, that meant I was the one responsible for the aesthetics of the game but also the one who had to lead the direction we would redesign the entities in the game. I got to work immediately with character concepts and art assets, that i will go into detail in my next post.
